A repeat client from Fargo recently contacted the team at Audio Garage to get some help with a stereo system upgrade for his 2021 Ice Castle Fish House. We’d installed a stereo in a previous fishing house several years ago for this client, and he loved the entertainment it provided while hanging out with friends. He wished he had upgraded the previous house he owned. When he ordered this 2021 20-foot Trophy Stryker, he came to us for guidance before construction began at the Ice Castle factory.
Integrated Wiring Delivers Reliability
The client was clear about his expectations of great sound and good bass performance. Because he planned to order the fishing house built to his specification, he bought all the wiring from us and shipped it to the Ice Castle Fish House factory in Montevideo, Minnesota. They agreed to run the wiring during the construction process so that we wouldn’t have to take anything apart during our portion of the upgrade. We supplied four-AWG power and ground cables that run to the pair of deep-cycle batteries. We also provided an adequate amount of 12-AWG speaker wire that they ran from the amplifier mounting location to the speaker locations in the ceiling.
After the trailer was at our shop, we installed two sets of Infinity Kappa 62ix 6.5-inch coaxial speakers in the roof. Ice Castle provided mounting spacers that made our installation much easier. These speakers feature oversized glass-fiber-reinforced woofer cones that increase the efficiency of the speakers and enhance bass production. The technology is called Plus One, and it includes an oversized voice coil with a low-impedance design that improves power handling while allowing the amplifiers to produce a little more power. You can think of these as a 3-ohm speaker instead of the conventional 4-ohm design. The black and copper cosmetics of the Kappa speakers blend nicely with the wood finish on the interior of the trailer.
Kenwood Multimedia Digital Source Unit
The sound system in this trailer uses a double-DIN Kenwood DMX706S radio as a source unit. This digital media receiver includes a 6.95-inch touchscreen display that makes it easy to choose audio tracks from a smartphone or USB memory stick. The client can also stream music directly from a Bluetooth device to the radio. If he wants to listen to an online streaming service like Pandora or Spotify, he’s all set.
Fishing Trailer Subwoofer and Amplifier
The audio system is powered by a five-channel Infinity Kappa amplifier. This compact amp can deliver about 90 watts to each of the four ceiling speakers and an impressive 350 watts to the system’s subwoofer. The amplifier includes all the crossovers and level adjustments we need to configure the system to sound great and play loudly.
Speaking of subwoofers, we installed a single 12-inch JL Audio 12W3v3-2 subwoofer in a vented enclosure to reproduce the bottom few octaves of the client’s music. The vented enclosure dramatically improves low-frequency output and the efficiency of the subwoofer system. With as much space as there is in this trailer, the extra output and extension help make the system sound the way the client wanted.
The amplifier and subwoofer are mounted out of the way in the storage area under the three-seat couch.
Upgrade Your Weekend Toys at Audio Garage
When we had all of the equipment installed and the amplifier configured to work with the Kappa Speakers and W3-Series subwoofer, we called the client to let him know his fish house was ready to roll. He had a listen to the audio system and was thoroughly impressed with its clarity and detail. We showed him how to pair his phone to the radio so he can stream music. He was thrilled with the project and was eager for the lakes to freeze so he and his friends could get out and do some fishing.
